Hot Time in the City

Your hair is exposed to a lot of harsh conditions during the summer heat. A little attention and common-sense hair care can go a long way to minimizing damage to your hair. Here are a few tips:

Protect your hair from UV damage at the beach or during long periods of sun exposure. Wearing a hat is the most effective protection, but you can also protect your hair by applying a sunscreen. Sunscreens for skin and hair can be used but must be applied thoroughly and evenly to be effective.

Perspiration, environmental dirt and quick drying hair products like hair spray and hard hold gel can cause dryness. Shampoo and condition your hair as needed with a gentle moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. After shampooing and conditioning, apply a light oil or grooming cream to your hair and comb the product through for complete and even coverage. Tousle lightly and allow it to air dry.

Go easy on styling products with a high alcohol content that will dry out your hair. Avoid excessive split ends by keeping the ends trimmed and minimize blow dryer use whenever possible. Always use an anti-chlorine shampoo after swimming in a pool.

For an easy deep conditioning treatment, take advantage of the summer heat and apply a moisturizing hair mask to clean hair before sun time. Rinse thoroughly after your outdoor activity.
